Gir bull frozen semen refers to semen collected from genetically superior Gir bulls (a pure Indian Bos indicus dairy breed) that has been processed, diluted, and cryogenically frozen into straws. These straws are stored and transported in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C, preserving the sperm’s viability for months to years until used for artificial insemination (AI) of Gir cows or other cattle.
Origin: Gir cattle originate from Gujarat, India and are renowned as one of the top indigenous milk-purpose breeds.
Traits: Gir cows are disease-resistant, heat tolerant, and adapt well to tropical climates.
Milk Production: Typical daily yields are good for Indian indigenous standards, and newer genetics (including imported lines) aim to increase this further.
By using semen from proven, superior bulls, farmers can improve the milk-producing ability, fertility, and resilience of their herd without keeping bulls on the farm.
Frozen semen can be distributed to remote areas and used when needed — the bull doesn’t have to be physically present.
National programmes (like the Rashtriya Gokul Mission) encourage use of high-genetic-merit semen (including Gir) and sex-sorted options to increase the number of female calves and raise milk yield over generations.
Thawing: A frozen semen straw is thawed in warm water.
Insemination: A trained inseminator deposits the semen into the cow’s reproductive tract at the correct time during estrus.
Pregnancy: If successful, the cow conceives and produces a calf with the genetics of the selected Gir bull.
Repeat Use: One Gir bull’s semen can be split into many doses, making breeding efficient.
